Many of the more than Jamaican athletes represented very well at the NCAA Division one Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas. It is not yet known how many will actually compete at the National Championships from June 20-23 but many showed good enough form to make themselves competitive for a spot to Doha.

JaneekBrown

Pride of place goes to impressive sprint hurdler Janeek Brown of the University of Arkansas (Wolmer’s girls) who set a National record of 12.40 to win her pet event. She returned to grab an important 4th place in the 200m (22.40). Her points went a far way in helping the “Hogs” win their 2nd National Outdoor title in three years.

Shardia Lawrence of Kansas State (Vere technical) produced 13.99m to with the Triple Jump and put herself in contention for a spot on the National team, based on form. Shanice Love of Florida State (XLCR) was second in the Discus with 62.69m with another Vere product representing Colorado State, Shadae Lawrence, third with 60.32m.

Junior Kiara Grant of Norfolk State (Alpha Academy) was sixth in the 100m with a National Junior Record of 11.04, (later broken by Briana Williams with 11.02) while another junior, Lanae-Tava Thomas (HS in USA) was sixth in the 200m with 22.74.

The men were not as impressive as only Jordan Scott of Virginia (Campion College) earned an individual medal with a good 17.01m in the Triple jump. Another former champs winner OBrien Wasome (JC) was fifth with 16.71m. Interestingly, Odaine Lewis, representing Champions Texas Tech (Cornwall College) finished 6th with 16.70m to hand his team valuable points enroute to the title.

Waseem Williams of Perdue (JC) ran a creditable 10.04 for fourth in the 100m. Unfortunately, he was the only Jamaican male in any individual track final.
