Shanieka Thomas-Ricketts registered a massive upset in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday as she won the Diamond League final in the triple jump with a 14.93m personal

ShaniekaThomas-Ricketts upstaged Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, the Pan Am Games record holder and world leader in the event to grab US$50,000 and the Diamond Trophy. Rojas was second with 14.74m, with Cuba’s Liadagmis Povea third with 14.49m.

“Before the last jump, I knew that I had a chance and I needed to take that chance,” she said. “This is my first Diamond League win, and with my PB, I am so happy. I do not know what I will do with the money.

Double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson looked a little below par and was third in the 200m in 22.44 seconds. Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo won with 21.74 with Dina Asher-Smith taking second in a season’s best 22.08.

Yohan Blake clocked 10.07 for third in the 100m behind the United States’ Noah Lyles who clocked 9.98 seconds. Xie Zhenye of China was second in 10.04.

Tajae Gayle finished third in the men’s long jump after posting 8.20m while Danniel Thomas-Dodd, Stephenie Ann McPherson, and Janieve Russell finished down the track in their events.

The second section of the Diamond league finals will take place next Friday.
