Death of iconic sprinter and coach Dennis “DJ” Johnson, OD

The Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association (JAAA) is extremely saddened by the passing of iconic Jamaican sprinter and coach Dennis “DJ” Johnson. Dennis portrayed excellence in whatever his involvement. He was one of the most feared sprinters in the world in the early 1960s, equalling the world record for the 100 yards among other outstanding feats.

JAAA President Garth Gayle was saddened by the news of his passing: “Dennis lived a long and full life doing what he loved – interacting with people, especially athletes,” said Gayle. “He never missed a moment to impart knowledge and crucial tips to anyone who would listen. He gave 100 percent to his country on all occasions. DJ worked well with the National teams he accompanied abroad, giving invaluable tips and guidance to every athlete, especially his sprinters. He will be sorely missed.” Gayle shared.

Dennis returned to Jamaica after studying where he revolutionized coaching and sprinting programme at his base; the University of Technology formerly College of Arts, Science and Technology. He was a mentor par excellence, guiding many young athletes to successes some never dreamt of.

The Jamaica Athletic Administrative Association sends condolences to his family, friends and countless mentees, asking them to stay strong in these tough times.
