Jamaica track and field athletes made their presence known at the Commonwealth Games in style on the second day of competition when the excellent Elaine Thompson-Herah duly obliged by taking Gold in the women’s 100m final. The time of 10.95 was not spectacular but the fastest woman alive did not care. The end result mattered most and how the medals are allocated. Jamaica’s other representative in the final, Natalliah Whyte, finished eight with 11.32.
The men’s event was won by Kenyan Ferdinand Omanyala in 10.02 seconds.
Earlier in the evening, Jamaica picked up silver when Danniel Thomas-Dodd was pipped by Canadian, Sarah Mitton in the Women’s Shot Put final. Mitton threw 19.03m, just five centimetres further than Thomas-Dodd who led from the third round but fouled her last three attempts. This opened the door for Mitton to snatch Gold on her final attempt. Jamaican Lloydricia Cameron was fourth with 17.62m.
Junelle Bromfield was the only qualifier in the women’s 400m as she finished 2nd in her heat posting 52.04. Compatriot Roneisha McGreggor could only manage a modest 53.28.
Navasky Anderson 1:47.79 posted the third fastest time overall to qualify for the final of the 800m.
All three Jamaican men qualified for the semifinals of the 400m by winning their heats. Nathon Allen looked good in running 45.18, while both Anthony Cox (45.51) and Javaughn Powell had more in hand at the tape.
