Jamaica had a penultimate day to remember in Birmingham, winning six medals; three gold, two silver and a bronze.

Superstar Elaine Thompson-Herah did not have to pull out all the tools as she comfortably won the 200m and completed a worthwhile sprint double. She ran a championship record of 22.02 to win with teammate Natalliah Whyte fourth in 23.06.

Not to be outdone, Janieve Russell became a two-time champion when she captured gold in the 400mh for women with 54.14 with Shiann Salmon taking silver in 54.47. Rushell Clayton finished just outside the medals in 4th with 54.57. Russell was the champion at the Gold Coast, Australia, in 2018 and also won bronze in Glasgow in 2014.

In the men’s 400mh, Jaheel Hyde ran the race of his life but came up short, winning silver in 49.78 to add to the bronze he won four years ago.

Earlier, Lamara Distin put the disappointment of a subpar performance at the National Championships behind her when she won gold in the high jump with 1.95m. Kimberly Williamson, who won then, was third with 1.92m.

Jamaica’s women will have to come up with something special if they are to win the sprint relay on Sunday, as they only had the fourth fastest time of 43.66 in the preliminaries.

Natoya Goule ran a season-best 1:57.88 but was unlucky in the 800m final as she led for 740m but was passed by three opponents close to home. She missed the bronze by 100th of a second to Laura Muir of Scotland with Mary Moraa of Kenya winning in 1:57.07.
