Two (2) weekends have passed since we posted about the week’s Upcoming Track & Field Meets. During the February 20-26 weekend, the Eastern Championships (20-21) were held at the National Stadium, followed that Saturday by the much anticipated, 50th Anniversary of the Gibson McCook Relays, which delivered many spectacular performances.

At the beginning of March, it was all about the regionals. The Central Athletics Championships were held from March 1-2 at GC Foster College and the Corporate Area Development Meet concluded its second of 2 days on Saturday, March 4 at the National Stadium.

Carifta Trials

The next stop on Jamaica’s Local Track & Field tour is the Carifta Trials. If the performances at the Gibson McCook Relays and the 4 regionals (Western, Eastern, Central & Corporate) were any indication, fans of track and field will be in for real thrills. The Carifta Trials starts its 3-day journey on Friday, March 10, 2023, at the National Stadium. All junior events will be contested, giving athletes a chance to qualify for the Carifta Games in Nassau, Bahamas from April 8-10. Notably, the Carifta Trials is a qualifier for the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys & Girls Championships to be held later this month.

The Carifta Trials are likely to start in the afternoon on Friday and in the morning on Saturday and Sunday and are staged to select Jamaica’s team for the Carifta Games.

GC Foster Classics

Double your pleasure, double your fun on Saturday, March 11, 2023, with the annual GC Foster Classics. This will be the last opportunity for hurdlers, especially class 4 and 3 girls (70m and 80m hurdles), before the ISSA/Grace Kennedy Boys & Girls Championships. While there will be other events on offer (including the 100m, 400m, 800m, High Jump, Discus, Shot Put and Javelin) at the Angels, St. Catherine facility, the hurdles in all classes are the real attraction for technical events coaches who relish this final competition opportunity to fine-tune their athletes.

The GC Foster Classics gets underway at 8:30 am Saturday and should be done approximately 9 hours later at 5:45 pm.

Track & Field is in full swing in Jamaica and if you haven’t yet had the chance to witness any live action this season, it’s not too late. Go out to either of the aforementioned venues to get a feel for what people have been talking about all year.
