The JAAA/Puma National Junior & Senior Championships is usually the main method used to select our national teams for the various Games and Championships. However, given the dates of the Central America & Caribbean (CAC) Games (July 2-8) which coincides with the date of our National Championships (July 6-9), we have had to develop selection criteria that are different from the norm in order to preserve our participation at the CAC Games, and at the same time remain fair and transparent to all stakeholders. This is an exceptional situation and the criteria are as follows:
In order to be selected for the CAC Games
- Athletes must complete an Intention to Participate Form (IPF) at CAC Games and waive their right to be considered for the Budapest 2023. They should indicate the event along with their Personal and Season’s Best. The date and location of those performances should also be stated and will be verified. The IPF is to be completed online by Monday, May 13 at 11:59 PM. The form can be accessed at https://form.jotform.com/231135046448856
- Athletes must also complete the Entry Form for National Championships in the event they are not selected for CAC Games. Athletes will be refunded their entry fee for the Championships if selected for the CAC Games.
- List of respondents published by May 15, 2023
- Athletes are selected based on the ranking of their Season’s Best performance among those who completed the IPF. If the Season’s Best performances are similar and they have World Ranking Points then the performance with the higher score will be selected. If the performance(s) do not have Word Ranking Points then the athlete with the most recent performance is selected. Athletes ranked in multiple events may be given greater consideration for selection.
- The selected team will be published on May 23, 2023, along with alternates for some events. Athletes cannot opt out of the CAC Team after June 1 in order to compete at National Senior Championships.
The athlete must also meet the following:
- Have a valid Jamaican passport which expires after February 28, 2024
- Achieved the qualifying standard for the CAC Games within the last 12 months
- Submit a medical declaration no earlier than May 20th stating that they are injury free and fit to compete.
Exception:
Having competed at the CAC Games, an athlete, by virtue of his/her World Ranking position achieved at the CAC Games, may be considered for selection for Budapest 2023 if World Athletics invites them.
