With the JAAA/Puma National Junior and Senior Championships quickly approaching (July 6-9), athletes have been working hard to improve their fitness, while others seek automatic qualification for the upcoming World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, World 200m champion Shericka Jackson was impressive in securing victory in her first 200m of the season at the JAAA All Comers Meet #3 at the National stadium. Jackson clocked 22.25 to win the event, well ahead of clubmate Stephanie Ann McPherson, 23.38, and Tatiana Pinto of Elite Performance Track Club, 23.74.
Britain’s Zharnell Hughes took the men’s event equivalent in a solid 20.18 with Tyquendo Tracey second in 20.81.
World championships finalist Oblique Seville continued his good start of the season with another victory in the men’s 100m in 9.94. He finished ahead of former World champion Yohan Blake who was 2nd in 10.15 and Nigel Ellis third in 10.22. Seville was happy with the win but thought the execution of the race could have been better.
“ I’m happy with the win but I believe I could have run faster, “ he said. “With good execution, you can get good times and unfortunately I didn’t execute the best today.”
Rohan Watson of MVP Track Club was second overall after winning his heat in a personal best 10.12.
Outstanding junior Alana Reid continues to impress as she secured victory in the women’s 100m in 11.16 ahead of Olympic Sprint relay gold medalist Briana Williams who posted 11.20. Tia Clayton was third in 11.36.
World championships relay medalist Staceyann Williams took victory in the women’s 400m with 51.43 with Ashley Williams second with 52.11.
There were a few outstanding performances by Jamaicans at the Bermuda Grand Prix where Sashalee Forbes produced her first ever sub-eleven clocking of 10.98 to finish second to American Tamari Davis in 10.91. Kemba Nelson was sixth in a season’s best 11.14.
Sprinter Ackeem Blake produced a fast 9.87 for a close third in the 100 m behind the Christian Coleman’s 9.78 and Noah Lyles’ 9.80. However, they ran with tail wind of 4.4mps.
Andrenette Knight took the 400mh with a season’s best 54.90. Former world champion Danielle Williams was second in the women’s sprint hurdles with a wind-aid (+3.5m/s) 12.38 behind Olympic Champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn who won with 12.17. Olympic bronze medalist Megan Tapper was 4th with 12.47.
Earlier in the week, Fedrick Dacres, who said he had a “bad day” at JAAA All Comers Meet #2, threw a season best and World championships qualifying mark of 68.57m to win the discus at the Tuscon Elite Throws held at the University of Arizona.
