There were two finals involving Jamaicans on day five, the intermediate hurdles for men and the 400m for women.

Young Roshawn Clarke put on a powerful performance in his final as he tracked the leaders all the way. He was in striking distance coming off the final bend but could not find enough to pass the medalists, eventually finishing fourth with 48.07. In the 400m final for women, Candice McLeod gave her all and finished 7th with 51.08.

Qualifications were smooth for the majority of athletes. 2015 World Champion in the women’s sprint hurdles, Danielle Williams, with 12.50 in her semifinal heat and Ackera Nugent 12.60, qualified for the final of the 100m hurdles. However, Megan Tapper was eliminated from her semifinal heat even after running 12.55.

In the heats of the 800m for women, Adelle Tracey ran 1:59.82 and Natoya Goule 1:59.64 as both advanced to the semifinals.

Wayne Pinnock took one attempt in the long jump preliminaries to span a world-leading 8.54m, while Carey McLeod did 8.19m and former champion Tajay Gayle qualified with 8.12m. The final is set for Thursday.

Three women advanced in the 200m. Shericka Williams posted 22.51, Kevona Davis 22.49 and Natalliah Whyte 22.44.

Both men also advanced in the 200m with Andrew Hudson at 20.25 and Rasheed Dwyer at 20.40. Shanieka Ricketts with a season’s best 14.67m, led the triple jump field with veteran Kimberly Williams at 14.30m. Ackelia Smith could only manage 13.95m, not long enough to advance.
