Fans at last weekend’s Carifta Trials witnessed multiple revisions to the Jamaica all-time under 20 performance list. Brianna Lyston of Hydel High School delighted those inside the National Stadium for the third and final day of the Trials on March 13 with a super run in the Under-20 200 metres.
Coached by Corey Bennett at Hydel, the slim 2021 World Under-20 200m finalist zoomed 22.66 seconds to move past Simone Facey on the all-time list with a flawless run.
The national junior record — 22.50 — was set by Brianna Williams, in a winning effort at the 2018 World Under-20 Championships.
J’Voughnn Blake, Rayon Campbell, and Jaydon Hibbert made similar progress. Blake, the Jamaica College deputy head boy, showed his class in the under-20 800m and covered the distance in 1 minute 47.62 seconds. Neville Myton’s national junior record – 1.46.5 – is the only performance by a Jamaican that is superior.
Teammates at Kingston College, Campbell and Hibbert stepped up too. Campbell and Roshawn Clarke of Camperdown High clocked 49.52 and 49.85 seconds respectively in the first 400m hurdles race with two Jamaican juniors under 50 seconds.
That personal best by Campbell is the 10th fastest time by a Jamaican Under-20 athlete. The top 9, including the record of 48.81 seconds, belong to Jaheel Hyde.
Hibbert, the 2021 World Under-20 triple jump runner-up, bounced 16.56 metres for his win.
Alexis James of Petersfield High School and Brian Levell of Edwin Allen High also produced notable marks. James now stands level with Janeek Brown as the joint ninth-fastest Jamaica junior 100m hurdler. James blitzed home in 13.16 seconds. Levell lodged into the number 10 spot on the Jamaican under-20 all-time performance list with his victory in the 200m, clocking 20.52 seconds.
Headwinds slowed two highly anticipated 100m races. Deandre Daley of Herbert Morrison High won the boys under-20 race in 10.32 seconds. Minutes earlier, Tia Clayton of Edwin Allen High edged her sister, World Under 20 champion Tina, 11.49 to 11.50.
Daley had to cut through a 1.6 metre per second breeze and the Clayton twins fought against a 1.5 wind. Better conditions prevailed during the heats on March 12 when Daley set a lifetime best of 10.30 seconds. 4 girls – the Clayton twins and the Hydel pair of Kerrica Hill and Alana Reid – went faster than the winning time in the final.
Hill led all qualifiers at 11.31 seconds.
The Carifta Games will be contested in Jamaica, at the National Stadium, starting on April 16 and ending on the 18th.
